Dodgy deals are a form of booby trap, but we're not just talking here about specific practices or tactics.
This is the total package.
Dodgy deals abound online for all kinds of reasons, not least the problems that government
authorities have in determining jurisdiction in trying to rub them out. A classic
example of this was the notorious SkyBiz2000 Internet scam which swept the
web like wildfire from 1998-2000, despite the same scam, from the same
people, having been outlawed by US courts twice prior to its latest incarnation.
The real reason why such scams are so widespread, of course,
is that people become victims of their own ignorance, fear of loss,
greed and gullibility. Despite widespread warnings of SkyBiz2000's
illegality, people flocked to join, lured by unscrupulous people
making equally unscrupulous promises of overnight riches. As always,
it was the originators and their cronies in crime who got
rich at the expense of their wild-eyed, foaming-at-the-mouth, WILLING
victims.
And that's the frustrating thing about scams of this kind. People
only join them for one reason, ultimately... their own greed
and gullibility. As the old, old proverb says, "there
are none so blind as those who WILL NOT see."
Dodgy Deals are not always scams. Sometimes they just give every impression
of being scams. Let's face it, if anyone is crazy enough to dress up a legitimate
business opportunity to look like a scam, they have a commercial death wish
which is probably going to come true!
Other Dodgy Deals may be well-meant, but cross the line through ignorance of the
laws and regulations that apply to them. Others may comply with the letter of those
laws, but not with the spirit of them.
